Miri Nakamura, PhD, CMT

Craniosacral Therapist
Somatic Experiencing
Miri (she/her) is a craniosacral therapist who specializes in trauma healing. At Sage, Miri offers craniosacral therapy and Somatic Experiencing, or a combination of both.

Miri had a serendipitous encounter with craniosacral therapy in 2010, when she was still a literature professor. Experiencing its transformative power first-hand, Miri decided to pursue this new path to help others experience the same kind of magic that helped her heal. As a craniosacral therapist, Miri truly believes that the body knows best how to heal itself. She understands that the client is the healer and sees herself as a facilitator who listens to their somatic wisdom. Depending on the client, her craniosacral sessions weave together Somatic Experiencing, Gestalt parts work, and energy healing, in order to access the deeper messages the body holds.

Somatic Experiencing further regulates the nervous system by building resilience in the body. Like craniosacral, it treats trauma as a physical sensation felt in the present, not a narrative of the past. It helps the body heal by reframing the trauma from a place of newly discovered empowerment. Miri’s combo sessions begin with Somatic Experiencing to help the client explore their body’s language, then adds the element of touch to further connect to their internal resources.

Miri is a Japanese immigrant with years of experience working with a diverse group of clients. She values the sense of home and safety and tries to recreate that in her sessions. Although she is a bodyworker, she also recognizes the importance for her clients’ stories to be heard, and she endeavors to offer a non-judgmental space for personal and cultural narratives to be voiced and processed.

Miri received her PhD in East Asian Studies from Stanford University and her bodywork certification from McKinnon Body Therapy Center. She is trained in both Upledger and biodynamic craniosacral therapy and is currently training with Sage to offer psychedelic-assisted craniosacral therapy in 2025. Outside of the clinic, Miri is often seen soaking in hot springs, wandering the desert, and petting any cat that crosses her path.
